What’s in my Airplane Bag?

The Ultimate Guide to Surviving Long Flights with Style and Comfort

So, you’re gearing up for a long-haul flight and the thought of spending hours cooped up in an airplane seat has you feeling like a sardine in a tin can. Fear not! With the right essentials packed in your airplane bag, you can transform that grueling journey into a surprisingly pleasant experience. Let’s dive into my must-have items that will turn your flight from "meh" to "YES!"

Picture this: You’re nodding off, we have all been there, where you look similar to one of those bobble head toys. Waking up from an unrestful nap with a kink that lasts for days.  Enter the neck pillow—the unsung hero of air travel. Choose one that cradles your neck like a baby’s blanket and provides support that’s softer than a cloud. My personal favorite? One with memory foam that hugs every contour of your neck. It’s like giving yourself a mini hug every time you close your eyes.

Ever wanted to drown out the world and drift away to a symphony of silence? Sound-canceling headphones are your golden ticket. These babies are designed to obliterate the droning engine noise and make every movie or playlist sound like your own private event. Bonus points if they’re so comfortable that you forget you’re wearing them!

I know it can't just be me, but do you feel like every time you get in an airplane you feel like you've entered the sub-below arctic? That's why this next item is a must! The travel blanket—your personal cocoon against the chill of the airplane cabin. Choose one that’s not just warm but also easily foldable. Some even come with their own carrying case, making it look like you’re pulling out a magic carpet. Wrap yourself up and prepare to feel like the coziest traveler on board.

Whether you're a die-hard paperback enthusiast or a preferred digital reader, a good book is my best travel accompaniment. It’s the perfect escape from the monotony of a long flight. I recommend loading up on a few page-turners, or if you’re using an e-reader, make sure it’s fully charged and stocked with more stories than you can read in one flight.

I don't know about you but I am wary of the mystery meat served at 35,000 feet. I always make it a point to pack a selection of my favorite snacks that will make me happy and keep me satisfied on the long journey. Think things high in protein to keep you full, things like crunchy granola bars, sweet dried fruit, or spicy nuts. And don’t forget a refillable water bottle (empty until you clear security) to keep hydrated and feel your best. Hydration is key to feeling great! Pro tip, I always bring IV hydration with me when I travel. It's surprising how dehydrated you feel on travel days and these little gems are packed with the vitamins you need to keep you feeling your best.

Want to make your seat feel like a personal sleeping pod? A sleep mask is your secret weapon. Block out those pesky overhead lights and simulate a dark, serene environment perfect for catching some much needed sleep, especially if you are like me and fly at 5am. Look for one that’s soft, adjustable, and just the right amount of snug. Also, I find that putting a sleep mask on is like putting on a “Do Not Disturb” sign on and it minimizes interruptions from neighbors and attendants. Because let's be real, I want to go to sleep and wake up at my destination.

As mentioned before, the airplane cabin is notorious for its unpredictable temperatures. A comfy jacket or sweater is essential for maintaining warmth and comfort. Choose one that’s versatile enough to double as a pillow or blanket. Because if you’re going to be cozy, why not be stylishly cozy?

Nothing’s worse than your devices dying just as you’re about to finish that epic movie or important work. Enter the portable charger: your electronic lifesaver. Opt for one with a high capacity that can juice up your gadgets multiple times. Because having a low battery is not an option when you’re traveling. Now, most airlines have outlets to charge devices, but imagine getting stuck in the seat where it doesn't work? It's happened to me. It is a good idea to travel with one of these bad boys anyway for when you get to your destination and will be out and about all day and don't have access to your charger.

Airplane air can be harsh on your skin, so a small stash of travel-sized toiletries is a must. Facial wipes, hand sanitizer, travel toothbrush/ toothpaste, moisturizer and lip balm can keep you feeling fresh. It’s your mini spa kit at 35,000 feet—pure bliss in a tiny bag.

Your passport, boarding pass, and travel insurance are your golden tickets. Keep them secure in a travel wallet or organizer. Trust me, you don’t want to be fishing around in your bag looking in all 20 pockets for where you stashed your passport. And of course, a pen is a smart addition to have for those inevitable forms at the end of your international travel flight—gotta make those in-flight customs declarations.

Aside from books, consider bringing along a tablet loaded with movies, shows, or games. Whether you’re a puzzle enthusiast or a movie buff, having extra entertainment options will keep boredom at bay and make your flight time fly by faster.

Pack any essential medications you might need. Also, bring along some over-the-counter remedies for common travel woes like headaches or motion sickness. A mini first-aid kit with band-aids and other basics is a small but mighty addition to your bag. I have found that these pill organizers are super helpful when packing, especially for vitamins, so you don’t have to carry all those large bottles in your suitcase!

Most importantly, let’s talk about your luggage. Why not make a statement with a stylish, functional bag that stands out from the crowd? Choose one that’s not only chic but also practical, with plenty of compartments and durable wheels (emphasis on the durable wheels). I took a trip to London and decided to walk to my hotel and after encountering the cobblestone road with a cheap suitcase, and only one wheel remained working, I learned that not skimping on quality luggage set is imperative to a successful and stress free experience. Imagine the return trip, going through the airport with a suitcase with only one working wheel. Nightmare. Moral of the story, be mindful of the quality of your most important piece. You deserve to travel in style but most importantly you deserve a stress free travel experience, so make sure you get something that can give you both!

A travel planner is more than just a notebook; it’s your personal travel assistant. Use it to jot down itineraries, important travel details, and to-dos. It helps keep everything organized and ensures you don’t forget a thing. Plus, it’s a great way to add a personal touch to your travel preparations. This cute option also doubles as a passion planners for all those wanderlust content creators out there!
