In order to help you plan your stay in this iconic city I have put together the perfect 7 day itinerary to explore the best this Catalan capital has to offer. In addition to the best places to visit and activities I have mapped out all of my best recommendations for accommodations, dining experiences and tours. This guide will help to ensure you will leave with an unforgettable experience with memories to last a lifetime.
So let's dive in!
Day 1: Arrival and Immersing in Barcelona’s Vibrant Atmosphere
One of the hardest things about planning a trip is choosing where to stay. There are so many incredible options throughout the city and so many cool neighborhoods. With that being said, if you want to make the most out of this itinerary choose accommodations in the Gothic Quarter or El Born.
For a luxury experience, consider staying at the Hotel Arts Barcelona, it offers stunning Mediterranean views and top-notch amenities. If you’re seeking something stylish yet mid-range, the H10 Madison is a chic 4-star hotel that offers modern comforts and a rooftop pool. Next up is The Catalonia Catedral Hotel, located close to La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya, it provides guests with a stunning stay that is the very essence of Catalan architecture. For a more budget-friendly option, Rialto is a comfy option right in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. Lastly, the Hostal Goya is another budget friendly option that provides cozy accommodations in a prime location.
Gothic Quarter
After you have checked in and before you hit the ground running, I wanted to mention a couple pro- tips to make sure you get the most out of your stay. There is one attraction that people come from around the world to see, the Sagrada Familia, every day hundreds of people wait HOURS to enter. So I'm going to give you a little trick to help you skip the lines and save you a lot of time, and money. Purchase the Barcelona City Pass, this pass allows you to not only skip the lines but it saves you money as well! You will have to purchase your pass in advance online, but once you have it you are set for your entire stay. It allows to to skip the line at places like the Sagrada Familia and for Park Güell, it acts as a ticket for the hop-on-hop-off bus in the city, and it offers discounts for other attractions and museums that may peak your interest during your stay- including the Picasso Museum, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). This pass is ideal for those looking to really dive into the city and visit the most famous attractions without the hassle of having to buy individual tickets. Some versions of the pass include a transfer service from Barcelona El Prat Airport to the city center, making your arrival more convenient.

I recommend starting your adventure getting familiar with the area, with a Walking Tour of the Gothic Quarter, this is my favorite part of town! In this tour you will explore thousands of years of Barcelona history in a day enjoying stops at the medieval Plaça del Reial, Barcelona Cathedral, La Boquería Market, and La Rambla. If you decide to opt out of this tour and want to explore the area at a self guided pace, I recommend making these two stops below priority (the others mentioned above I have added in other days of the itinerary).
Make sure to check out La Rambla, Barcelona’s iconic boulevard. Stretching from Plaça de Catalunya to the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. This famous street is lined with shops, cafes, and street performers, giving you a taste of the city’s vibrant life. Next, walk over to the La Boquería Market, this colorful public market right off La Rambla is where you can sample fresh fruits, local cheeses, wine, cured meats and tantalizing tapas. Speaking of delicious tapas, I would be remiss to not mention a Tapas and Wine Tour while in Barcelona. During this particular tour you will get full gourmet experience from a local guide and dine at some of the city’s best tapas bars. At each restaurant, sample an array of delicious Catalan cuisine, taste local specialties and choose from a selection of fine regional wines. You can choose between an afternoon or evening tour and upgrade to include a flamenco show.
La Boquería Market
I highly recommend spending the evening watching a Flamenco Show, a traditional Spanish style dance that is both lively and expressive, and so much fun to watch! I especially recommend “Los Tarantos”, one of the oldest and most famous tablaos in the city. It's a short show, just 30 minutes and wont take up your entire night but it offers a great introduction into the art.
If you want to grab a bite to eat after the flamenco show these are some top rated choices in the area. First is El Quim de la Boqueria, situated within the vibrant La Boquería market, this eatery is celebrated for its fresh, high-quality Catalan dishes. Another great option is Bar Celta Pulpería, though not directly on Las Ramblas, this place is highly rated for its traditional Spanish dishes. Its authentic, cozy atmosphere and delicious food make it a standout option in the area. For travelers that want to have a sweet treat, be sure to head over to Granja Dulcinea or La Pallaresa, both in the Gothic Quarter, they are historic cafes known for their delicious churros and chocolate!
Granja Dulcinea
Day 2: Gaudí’s Architectural Wonders
Today is dedicated to the genius of Antoni Gaudí, whose unique vision has left an indelible mark on Barcelona. He was one of the most influential modernist architects and his work focuses on organic curves and shapes inspired by nature. No visit to the city is complete with visiting Gaudí’s legendary masterpieces, you can find them everywhere! Begin your day by grabbing a quick bite to eat near your accommodations or head to Bunas Migas, a local coffee chain next to the Sagrada Familia, where you can get pastries, focaccia and other quick bites to help fuel you for the adventure ahead.
Sagrada Familia
After breakfast, head to one of the best places to visit in Barcelona. The awe-inspiring Sagrada Familia, Gaudí’s most famous designs and an iconic symbol of Barcelona. This extraordinary Basilica, still under construction, is a stunning mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture. The Basilica is set to be finished in 2026 to mark 100 years since Gaudí’s passing. This is one stop where you have to go inside! Inside the Basilica, you are surrounded by mesmerizing stained glass windows and the way the sun shines through them is a truly magical experience. As I mentioned before, make sure to book your tickets online in advance to avoid long lines and to fully appreciate its intricate details (get the Barcelona City Pass). Another thing to note, although this is a heavily inundated tourist attraction, it is still a place of worship and modest dress should be worn.
Inside the Sagrada Familia
After you enjoy touring the Basilica, head over to the Ayre Hotel Rosellon for a quick snack or drink. This rooftop bar offers some of the most INCREDIBLE views of the Sagrada Familia!
Next, be sure to take a walk along Passeig de Gràcia, an elegant boulevard famous for its high-end shops and remarkable buildings. Here, you’ll find Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera), two of Gaudí’s architectural marvels. One of my favorite sights in all of Barcelona next to Sagrada Familia is Casa Batlló. Often referred to as “The Dragons Den” This is a masterpiece you can not miss. It's an immersive experience that helps you to dive into Antoni Gaudí’s imaginative world. Its enchanting exterior, vibrant mosaic tiles, and dragon-inspired roof make it an awe inspiring sight.
Casa Batlló
From there, head to Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera. Its rolling limestone facade and wrought-iron balconies resemble a rugged, natural landscape, designed to evoke the sense of a snowy mountain. It also features an extraordinary rooftop terrace that adds to the unique artistic charm.
For lunch, head to El Nacional, a stylish multi-zone restaurant where you can savor a wide variety of Spanish dishes in a chic setting. Another lunch option is Tanto Monta, just a short distance from Casa Milà, Tanto Monta offers delicious gourmet sandwiches and salads. The laid-back atmosphere and high-quality ingredients make it a fantastic spot for a quick and satisfying lunch.
Casa Milà
Afterward, explore Park Güell, another Gaudí creation. This whimsical park is adorned with vibrant mosaics and offers panoramic views of Barcelona, making it a perfect spot for photos and relaxation.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at Fonda Gaig renowned for its refined Catalan cuisine and elegant setting. It has received high praise for its exceptional quality, traditional recipes, and sophisticated ambiance. Another great choice would be Café del Sol. It offers guests a cozy ambiance and outdoor terrace are often highlighted in reviews, along with its delicious and well-prepared dishes of traditional Mediterranean and Catalan cuisine. It’s a favorite for a relaxed, enjoyable dining experience after visiting Park Güell.

Day 3: Exploring Barcelona’s Gothic Charm
Before you jump into exploring for the day let's get you some breakfast!
The first option I would like to recommend is Chök - The Chocolate Kitchen, if you are looking for a sweet start to your day, Chök offers an array of pastries, chocolates, and gourmet coffee. Its unique approach to breakfast makes it a favorite among those who start the morning craving something sweet. Another favorite is Brunch & Cake, although slightly outside the Gothic Quarter, it’s worth the short walk. Known for its smoothie bowls, avocado toast, and delicious pastries, it’s a great spot to enjoy a hearty and healthy breakfast.
Brunch and Cake
Okay, now that you have fueled up and your bellies are happy, allow me to map out your third day of exploration. Step back in time and explore Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter). This historic neighborhood is a maze of narrow medieval streets, where you’ll discover so many hidden squares and ancient buildings.
Stop by and admire the Barcelona Cathedral, its Gothic architecture is full of intricate details and sculptures that just add to its grandeur. Next up is Plaça de Sant Jaume, located in the heart of the city's Gothic Quarter, Plaça de Sant Jaume is one of Barcelona's most historically significant and vibrant squares. This central plaza serves as the administrative and political hub of Barcelona, housing two of the city's most important buildings.
Barcelona Cathedral
Continue your walk down to Plaça Reial. This square is renowned for its beautiful neoclassical architecture and lively atmosphere. The square’s blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy offers an enjoyable experience, whether you’re sipping coffee at a café, taking in the artistic details of Gaudí’s lamp posts, or simply soaking in the ambiance the historical charm combined with modern vibrancy makes Plaça Reial a must-visit destination in the heart of the city.
For lunch, enjoy traditional Catalan flavors at El Xampanyet, a beloved tapas bar renowned for its cava and traditional Catalan tapas. The lively atmosphere and delicious montaditos (small sandwiches) make it a great spot for a casual and authentic dining experience. Cervecería Catalana is another popular option just a short walk from the Gothic Quarter, this renowned spot is famous for its extensive tapas menu and energetic atmosphere.
El Pont del Bisbe- Gothic Quarter
In the afternoon, I suggest heading over to the El Born neighborhood right across from the Gothic Quarter. It's a charming and trendy area with boutique shops, a few cathedrals and plenty of tapas bars and restaurants. While you are here make sure you check out the art at the Picasso Museum. This museum houses an extensive collection of Pablo Picasso’s early works, providing a fascinating insight into his artistic evolution.

It’s a great place to relax with a coffee or tapas, people-watch, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the neighborhood. Then head over to visit Santa Maria del Mar. This stunning Gothic church is one of Barcelona’s many architectural gems. It’s known for its beautiful stained glass windows, and is as impressive inside as it is outside.
Santa Maria del Mar
Lastly, relax and unwind and enjoy the fresh air as you enjoy a walk through the Park Ciutadella, located at the edge of El Born, this expansive park is perfect to rest, walk or picnic. It features a beautiful lake and gardens, the Cascada Monumental (a grand fountain), and the Barcelona Zoo. Another point of interest by the park is The Arc de Triomf.
After you have finished seeing all the sights, it's time to grab some dinner. A popular option in the area is Cal Pep, renowned for its high-quality, traditional tapas with a modern twist. The menu includes a variety of fresh seafood, like their famous shellfish, as well as other classic Spanish dishes. The open kitchen and counter seating create an interactive dining experience, allowing you to see the chefs in action and engage with the staff. This energetic environment contributes to a memorable dining experience.
Cal Pep
El Born and El Raval are Barcelona's two trendiest neighborhoods for nightlife. El Born, with its charming, narrow streets, boasts a mix of stylish bars, trendy cocktail lounges, and laid-back tapas spots. Meanwhile, El Raval presents a more eclectic and edgy vibe, featuring everything from underground clubs and live music venues to quirky bars and late-night eateries. Both are great options whether you're looking to dance the night away or enjoy a relaxed evening with friends.
Day 4: Museums and Modern Barcelona
Today’s itinerary includes a blend of art and culture. After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to the Fundació Joan Miró, where you can explore the colorful and imaginative works of one of Barcelona’s most famous artists, Joan Miró. The museum’s collection showcases many of the artist's surrealist works, over 14,000 of them and offers a unique perspective on his artistic journey.
Next, head to Poble Espanyol, an open-air museum that replicates Spanish architecture and crafts from various regions of the country. The village also hosts cultural events, performances, and festivals, making it a fascinating destination that provides a rich and immersive experience.
For lunch, enjoy a meal at La Pepita, a modern Catalan restaurant known for its inventive and mouthwatering dishes. Or for an alternative spin on lunch, take a traditional Catalan Cooking Class. After all, when it comes to cooking, books and videos are no substitute for learning from a local. Bring home recipes to remember when you book this fun and interactive experience.

This museum boasts an impressive collection of Catalan art spanning from the Romanesque period to the 20th century, housed in a stunning building with panoramic views of the city. The fountain out front has a spectacular free show that takes place on Thursdays through Saturdays.
For a memorable dining experience, head to Tickets in the evening. This restaurant consistently receives high praise for its inventive and artistic approach to tapas. It offers an exceptional dining experience that's both visually stunning and delicious. Reservations are essential, and it’s recommended to book well in advance due to its popularity.

Here you can explore Castell de Montjuïc, an 18th century fortress turned museum. This is an incredible place to catch panoramic views of the city while overlooking the coastline.

Spend your afternoon relaxing at Barceloneta Beach, one of Barcelona’s most popular beaches. It is centrally located, offering a lively atmosphere, beachfront bars, restaurants and a boardwalk. Day 8: A Dreamy Day in Costa Brava
Spending a day in Costa Brava is a perfect ending to an amazing vacation. I recommend booking a guided day trip here as travelers that want to visit typically need to rent a car. And while you're driving you are not really able to take in the beauty of the scenic coastline. Avoid the trouble and book a private Costa Brava Day Trip, with this trip you will have a guide to chauffeur you around by private vehicle. Along the way, you can choose what you want to see all while enjoying spectacular coastal views.

For the more adventurous travelers who don't mind renting a car for the day, I recommend starting your day early by exploring the picturesque coastal town of Tossa de Mar, where you can wander through the medieval streets of the old town, admire the historic Vila Vella fortress, and enjoy the beautiful beach. After soaking in the sea views, drive along the scenic coastal road to Lloret de Mar, where you can visit the lush Santa Clotilde Gardens for breathtaking views and serene gardens.

Explore the narrow streets and walk along the scenic waterfront, explore its small art galleries and boutiques, and don't forget to visit the Salvador Dalí House-Museum, where the iconic painter lived and worked for decades. The blend of natural beauty and artistic heritage makes Cadaqués a lovely place to spend the afternoon.
Wrap up your day with dinner at Restaurant Casa Anita in Cadaqués, which offers a cozy setting and excellent local dishes, or head back to Lloret de Mar to dine at Restaurant El Trull for a memorable end to your Costa Brava adventure.
